Abstract: Since the early 1970s, the Respiratory Department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, embodying the National Respiratory Key Disciplines, has developed its independent institution of 3Grade Respiratory Discipline. After decades of efforts and contributions of generations, it became one of national-level key disciplines in 2007. The past decade has witnessed the innovative development of ICU and respiratory support technology, a modern discipline mode combined with critical care medicine actively advocated, a further impetus to comprehensive study on pulmonary embolism and pulmonary vascular disease, which has opened up a new horizon in this academic area in China. The Respiratory Department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital has been committed to the social responsibilities, making great contribution in coping with newly emerging respiratory contagious diseases. It has also been dedicated to respiratory diseases prevention, nationwide tobacco control and the establishment of clinical smoking cessation system. In particular, through the collaborative effort of multiple disciplines to attain optimal treatment for endstage lung diseases, it has taken the initial lead in lung transplantation in China. Aiming at the inspiration sources and engine of China’s respiratory academics, the Respiratory Department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital has put in great efforts to improve China’s respiratory disciplinary construction and development. The hospital authorities have also been attaching great importance to the cultural construction of the Respiratory Discipline. All medical staff are demanded to keep Kindness, Responsibility, Capability and Love in mind, and hold on Integrity, Diligence, Dedication and Humanity in action.
