Abstract: Robert Edwards is awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize for the development of human in vitro fertilization(IVF) therapy. On 25 July, 1978, the world’s first “test tube baby” was born, and today close to 4 million babies have been born thanks to the discovery of human IVF. Children born after IVF are in general as healthy as children born after natural conception according to several long-term follow-up studies. Though Edwards’ work raised many ethical problems, it is indisputable that his achievement made it possible to treat infertility, a medical condition afflicting a large proportion of humanity including more than 10% of all couples worldwide.
