Abstract: With the rapid development of precision medicine in cancer, the demand for dynamic monitoring of tumor molecular characteristic has been increased. In recent years, liquid biopsy is currently playing a more and more important role in diagnosis and treatment of cancer in clinical practice due to its convenience, non-invasiveness, high specificity and overcoming temporal-spatial heterogeneity. This review introduces circulating tumor cell (CTC) and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) as the most important technique in liquid biopsy, mainly focusing on their technological feature, especially recent research progress in colorectal cancer. Further, the challenge and possible solution are discussed in the clinic application of liquid biopsy.

Key words: liquid biopsy, colorectal cancer, circulating tumor cells, circulating tumor DNA
