Abstract: Objective To investigate the mechanism of Li Xue Jie Du Fang in the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris. Methods Totally 105 cases with psoriasis vulgaris classified as blood heat syndrome, blood-dryness syndrome, and blood stasis syndrome according to the traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) differentiation-types were studied. Serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in patients and normal controls were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay before and 8 weeks after treatment. Results Compared with the data of normal controls, the serum levels of VEGF in the patients were significantly increased(P<0.01), while a significant difference of the serum levels of VEGF in patients with blood heat syndrome and blood-dryness syndrome was observed between the before and after treatment values(P<0.05). Conclusion These results indicated that Li Xue Jie Du Fang could reduce the serum levels of VEGF in patients with psoriasis vulgaris. This study suggested that suppression of angiogenesis may be one of the mechanisms of Li Xue Jie Du Fang in the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris.
