Abstract: Objective To observe the effects of ShenGuiQianLieShuang capsule(QLS) against experimental benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH) in rats and mice. Methods The experimental BPH model was induced in castrated rat with subcutaneous injection of testosterone propionate once daily for four weeks at a dosage of 0.5 mg/rat, at the same time different doses of QLS and Pule, an tablet were administrated orally in the same way. At the end of experiment, the weight of prostate was measured and the pathological changes in prostate were observed under light microscope. Another experimental BPH model was induced in male mice by implanting of fetal urogenital sinus(from 16 d fetal mice) into the prostate tissue, QLS capsule and Pule were given for four weeks after the implanting. At the end of experiment, the weight of prostate and the content of prostatic acid phosphatases(PAP) in prostate were measured. Results Compared with the model group, the wet(and dry) weight and the weight index of prostate were decreased significantly in both QLS groups(10.8 g/kg, 5.4 g/kg) and Pule, an group(2.5 g/kg) in the rat BPH model(P<0.01). The wet(and dry) weight and the weight index of prostate were also decreased in QLS group at the dosage of 2.7 g/kg, though there was no statistically difference. The pathological changes of prostate were ameliorated in QLS groups(10.8 g/kg, 5.4 g/kg) and Pule, an group(2.5 g/kg), including the height of epithelial cells and the hyperplasia of prostate gland. In the mice BPH model, significant decreasing effects were found in PAP level, wet weight and the weight index of prostate in QLS groups(15.0 g/kg, 7.5 g/kg) and Pule, an group(3.5 g/kg). Conclusion ShenGuiQianLieShuang capsule shows a protective effect against experimental benign prostatic hyperplasia, and the inhibition of PAP in prostate may be involved in the mechanism.
