Professor Wang is the first academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in the field of stomatology. He has made great achievement in the salivary gland diseases diagnosis and treatment, as well as tooth functional restoration. It mainly includes:1) discovering nitrate transporter Sialin (SLC17A5), elucidating the molecular mechanism of high concentration nitrate in parotid gland, and demonstrating the new important physiological and clinical functions of nitrate in gastrointestinal and other organs protection; 2) establishing a new classification and treatment guideline for chronic inflammatory parotid gland diseases; 3) developing "dental pulp mesenchymal stem cell injection" as a new drug of stem cells and advancing forward the concept of "bio-root regeneration"; and 4) discovering mammalian tooth replacement mechanism. These scientific breakthroughs are of great significance to the oral functional preservation and restoration. Many achievements have been recorded in international academic monographs, textbooks, invited reviews and national textbooks.

Dr. Zhang Chen, Professor and Dean, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Capital Medical University. As the most common neurodegenerative disease, the early causes of Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain unclear. Dr. Zhang has long been devoted himself to exploring the early neurological pathogenesis of AD. He found that short-term plasticity abnormality is an early pathological event in AD cases, and this deficit is caused by intracellular ryanodine receptor deficiency. Furthermore, using the two-photon method to study neural circuit activities on awake animals, he found that the prefrontal cortex incapable of encoding short-term memory is an earlier pathological event of AD compared with short-term plasticity deficits. Moreover, Dr. Zhang has identified several novel candidates (PTPRO, ABHD6 and others) functioning in the process of synapse formation and synaptic transmission, providing potential candidates for AD treatments.

Metabolic reprogramming occurs widely in dividing cancer cells. However, its origin is still unclear. Herein we put forward a concept to characterize the potential free electrons for metabolic compounds. Using such a concept, we can easily quantitate the electrons consumed in metabolic reactions. Derived from the electron conservation law in chemical conversions, we have further established an electron balance model for the core metabolism, which can commendably profile metabolic actions in the hypoxic conditions. Our model stipulates that the electron transfer drives metabolic reprogramming, provides the promising targets for cocktail inhibitors to achieve the controlling of tumor growth under hypoxia.

He has been devoting himself to the dream of "protecting memory and keeping the beauty of the world". He led the team to overcome the challenges to dementia and found a marker that can predict memory declines 5-7 years before the onset of symptoms, which provided precious chance of early prevention. In order to set up dementia treatment guidelines suitable for Chinese, he made great efforts to explore the occurrence and progress of dementia, epidemiology of dementia and the genetic rules of dementia in China. He has reported the "blowout phenomenon"(more than 40 million) in the number of memory disorders caused by ageing among Chinese population for the first time, and also pointed out that dementia could be prevented by controlling the risk factors. The focus of his research has been on the genetic pattern of dementia in Chinese and the possibility of early intervention in dementia patients carrying risk genes, and he reported pathogenic gene mutations in Chinese for the first time and proposed the genetic intervention strategies. To establish the animal models for development of anti-dementia drugs in China, he has constructed 10 new Alzheimer's disease animal models based on Chinese genetic variations, which highlighted the research spirit of self-reliance. To standardize the clinical practice of dementia and cognitive impairment in China, he was in charge of establishing the 2010 and 2015 editions of the "Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Dementia and Cognitive Impairment in China", and published 23 articles, which greatly advanced the level of clinical diagnosis and treatment of dementia in China. In addition, he has led more than 20 clinical trials to develop the new anti-dementia drugs. He discovered two new drugs DL-3-n-butylphthalide and Sailuotong which showed a positive effect on vascular dementia. This achievement attracted attention of scholars in China and oversea. He and his group have immersed themselves in the exploration to prevent dementia in China and have taken a leading role in anti-dementia worldwide. The man is Professor Jia Jianping.
