Abstract: Toll like receptors(TLRs) are a class of transmembrane receptors. They are expressed mainly in antigen presenting cells as well as epithelial cells, and can activate immune reaction by recognizing specific ligands. Besides exogenous ligands, TLRs can also recognize some of the endogenous ligands. Overactivation of TLRs' endogenous signal will induce autoimmune diseases. In this review, we summarize the types of TLRs and their ligands, and discuss the TLRs pathways and functional regulation. We focus on the recent researches about the association of TLRs with some autoimmune diseases, and prospectively discuss the roles of TLRs in the therapy of these diseases.
