Progress in the pathophysiology of diabetes retinopathy

Abstract: Diabetic retinopathy (DR), one of the important causes of blindness in adults, seriously threatens the life quality of patients with diabetes mellitus and brings heavy economic burden to the society. Previous studies have shown that the impairment of neurovascular unit (NVU) plays an important role in the occurrence and development of DR, including retinal vascular endothelial cells damage, impairment of cell junctions, loss of pericytes, pericyte-endothelial cells communication impairment and so on.
