Abstract:

Multi-channel cochlear implantation is the only way to help the profoundly hearing impaired to hear.Since the first Chinese pediatric multiple-channel cochlear implantation was carried out in Beijing Tongren Hospital in 1996,there have been more than 800 patients received their cochlear implants now.During the past 10 years,an integrated cochlear implant team has set up,which consists of otologists,audiologists,audiological physicians,technicians,speech pathologists and nurses as well.Numerous achievements and renovations in related areas have been made such as establishment of the first Chinese audiology course,the contribution to the release of regulation on neonatal hearing screening in China,the expanded candidacy in cochlear implantation,the innovative surgery skill and development of speech test materials based on Chinese.Besides, Beijing Tongren Hospital made great effort to raise public awareness of hearing care by TV or radio live broadcasting,internet,booklets,newspapers and magazines et al.With Tongren's avocation,Mr.Wang Yongqing,the chairman of Formosa Plastics Group,and the president of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital donated 14,750 multi-channel cochlear implants worthy of 150 000 RMB each to the mainland of China.Not only the hearing impaired in mainland China but also the field of deafness prevention will get great benefit from this program.
