Abstract:

Objective To investigate if ruthenium red (RR) possesses differentiating effects on baroreceptors and to understand the relationship between these different effects and types of the baroreceptors. Methods Carotid sinus-nerve preparation of the rabbit was perfused intrasinusally and extrasinusally in vitro. Baroreceptor discharges were recorded from nerve filaments containing 2-5 fibers while the intrasinusal pressure was clamped with pulsatile or ramp waves. Single fiber discharges were obtained by sorting the few-fiber discharge using software Spike 2. Results According to the response to RR (20 μmol /L), baroreceptor fibers can be distinguished into two types: RR sensitive and insensitive fibers. To further analyze electrophysiological characteristics of the two types, we found that the RR sensitive and insensitive fibers correspond with C- and A-fibers, respectively. Conclusion Carotid sinus fibers can be classified into two types according to the response to RR (20 μmol /L). The two types of baroreceptors might belong to A- and C-fibers, respectively. The results suggested that the mechanisms for mechano-electrical transduction in the two types of baroreceptor fibers might not be the same.
