Abstract: The spinal pre EPSP (the pre EPSP) could be evoked at the soma of the Mauthner cell in the crucian carp by direct stimulation of the spinal cord. The pre EPSPwas different from the spinal EPSPwith its shorter latency (1.33±0.21) ms , lower amplitude (2.22±1.08) mV , shorter duration (2.65±0.83) ms and lower threshold (3.49±0.74) V . The excitability of the Mauthner cell could be modulated by the pre EPSP, which was probably mediated by the afferent pathway of larger diameter, faster conduction velocity, and mixed monosynaptic relay.
