Abstract: Objective To study the relationship between erectile dysfunction(ED) and the abnormalities of testosterone(T) and Prolactin(PRL) levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) in men. Methods Erectile function(EF) of 60 men with T2DM and a control group of 51 non-diabetic men were assessed with the International Index of Erectile Function(IIEF).Venous blood was drawn for the determination of T and PRL.Results The IIEF scores and values of total testosterone(TT) in diabetic men were significantly lower than those of the controls(P<0.001) and the values of PRL were significantly higher than those of the controls(P<0.001).Conclusion There are hypogonadism and ED in men with T2DM.Diabetic ED closely correlates not only with the sex hormone(T and PRL),but also with the diabetic duration and hypertension. It is very important to examine the sex hormone level in diabetic men with T2DM with ED.The relationship between T2DM and sex hormone needs further research.
