Abstract: One hundred and sixteen cases with fractures of extremities were treated with external fixation using modular external fixators . The rate of open fracture is 55%. The duration of follow up was from 3 months to 5 years. The rate of fracture healing was 93%. Modular external fixators provided good fixation for treating long bone shaft fractures of extremities, especially open or infected fractures with severe soft tissues injuries. With the advantages of secure fixation, high rate of fracture healing, allowing early mobilization at the joints around fracture site, being easy to operate and low cost, modular external fixators were especially suitable for county hospitals where the instruments and surgical technique were relatively undeveloped.
