Abstract: The objective was to observe the protective effect of Chinese herbal compound, Suishangping (SSP) on ischemia reperfusion injury of the brain. Altogether 24 Sprague-Daleg rats were randomly divided into four groups: normal control group (NCG), ischemic injury group (BG), SSP group (SG) and nimodipine group (NG). It was followed by reperfusion of blood for 2 h to blockade blood flow in the common carotid artery with silk ligature for 30 mins in BG, SG, and NG. SOD activity and MDA content were detected in various groups. It has been demonstrated that MDA value in rats-SG was lower than that in rats-BG (P<0.05), and SOD activity in rats-SG was higher than that of BG (P< 0.05). It shows that SSP can reduce the contents of MDA, and stimulate SOD activity, so that it maybe indirectly resist the damage of oxygen-derived free radicals.
