Abstract: Objective To evaluate the sensitivity, specificity and selective capability of chromogenic agar in the screening group B streptococcus (GBS) in the pregnant women. Methods A total of 312 rectum/vaginal swabs, collected from pregnant women, as well as 9 known GBS strains, were inoculated on the blood agar plates (BAP) and chromogenic medium chromID Strepto B agar (STRB) directly and after the selective enrichment, respectively. The screening results of the above-mentioned methods were compared. Results The STRB showed the excellent performance for GBS detection and outperformed BAP. The selective enrichment is an essential step to screen the GBS isolates due to its higher sensitivity(95.65% vs 86.96%)while both methods have the similar specificity. Conclusion STRB demonstrated good detection rate of GBS for its direct identification and effective inhibition of non-targeted bacteria.
