Spinal evoked potentials (SEP) epidurally recorded from the ipsilateral dorsal columns of L3-4 in anaesthetized rats following stimulating the common peroneal nerve consisted of a fast triphasic spike potential, wave A; slow negative waves, N1 and N2; and a positive wave, P. These waves remained stable throughout the period of blank control up to 2-4 hours. In the course of graded compression at L4-5 and neighbouring segments caudal to them, no alteration was seen in the latency of wave A; the peak latencies of waves A and N were prolonged as graded compression increa sed progressively; the amplitude of waves A, N and P linearly decreased with increasing intensity of pressure and when the compression intensity came up to 225 (X) mmHg, waves N and P disappeared, while wave A remained and became a final potential. After removal of the compression, which had lasted 5 minutes at the leval of 300 mmHg, the a mplitude of SEP recovered quickly in the first 15 minutes and then the recovering rate slowed; recovery of slow waves was better than that of fast wave; the wave A’s peak latency recovered synchronously with retrieval of its amplitude, whereas the restoration of the peak latency of wave N was slower than that of its amplitude. These results indicate that the spinal cord is sensitive to mechanical compression and the decrease in function of the spinal cord correlates linearly with the increase in intensity of the pressure.

The method of stepwise Iinear regression is to establish the RELATION between a dependent variable and some important independent variables. y=a+b1x1+b2x2+……+bLxL The method of auto stepwise in this paper lies in automa tically selecting important independet variables so that the ESTIMATE ACCURACY reaches the best level in general. The program was written in BASIC on PC-1500.

The present paper presented some data about the course, flexure, diameter and length of external cranial segment of the vertebral artery obtained from observation and measurement in 31 chinese corpses. 1. 6.5% of the second part of the vertebral artery were compressed by the large uncovertebral joint and presented flexures in the corresponding site. 2. There existed 6 flexures in the third part of the vertebral artery and marked changes were fovnd in the first and second flexures. 3. The diameters in most parts of the tfcl vertebral artery were greater than those on the right. In individual case the diameter of the left vertebral artery differs markedly from that of the right. 4. The meana vlue of the length of the extracranial segment of the vertebral artery were as follows: Left, 192. 41mm right, 189. 67mm. In adaition, some problems about the division of the vertebral artery and the mechanism of the cervical spondylopathy and others were also discussed and analysed in this paper.

In 1981, an electrophoretically slow moving hemoglobin variant was found by cellulose a cetate electrophoresis among the healthy people in Beijing. This a bnormal zone migrated between Hb A and Hb A2 and occupied a position in the Q group. Structure studies demonstrated that this homoglobin variant was Hb Q Thailand. Valla et al first reported Hb Q Thailand combined with Hb H in a chinese family of singa pore in 1958 without performing any structure analysis. This variant was subsequently reported in Thaiwan, Thailand, and Japan, and was named Hb G Thaichung (α74 (EF3) Asp→His) or Hb Q Thailand. Zheng first reported in main land of China. Up to now, many of this variant have been reported in the south, but has never been reported hitherto in the north.

A clinico-pathological study of cytomegalic inclusion disease (CMID) was carried out on 13 autopsied cases with 1 case confirmed by urinary cellular examination, 11 being infant and 3 adult. In this group 9 cases were generalized CMID involving primarily the lung, kidney, liver, brain and other organs. Among the 9 cases, 5 died of interstitial pneumonia and serious damage of liver. The patholgical features, clinical symptoms and diagnosis concerning CMID were also discussed.

In order to estsblish an urinary enzyme assay as an useful and significant clincal or investi-gative laboratory aid, the kinetics of the hydrolysis of phenolphthein mono-β-glucuronide by-G in human urine was investigated. In our study the optimum pH was 5.2 in 0.2M acetate buffer at 37℃. The substrate concentration required was found to be 3×10-3m and the enzyme had a Michlis constant of 1.6+0.39mM (X+SD) of phenol-phthalein glucuronide. The reac-tion velocity was constant within an observation period of 4-20 hours. in addition, the absorption spectrum of phenolphthalein liberated, the effect of urine samples storage in refrigerator and reproducibility of the results were tested aiso. Urinary β-G activity was observed in 45 patients with carcinoma of urinary bladder and 56 normal subjectl. It was found that the activity of β-G in the urine was usually increased in patients with bladder carcinoma and usually decreased 1-10 months after sur-gery in 22 patients. As to the question of whether the increased β-G is due to the trigger mech-anism causing the tumor or is the consepuence of the neoplasia remains to be studied.

26 cases of fracture of sacrum in this series of 50 patients with double vertical fracture-dislocation of pelvis were analysied in respect of their fracture patterns. They constituted 52% in this series and appeared in various types. Taking account of fracture line and direction of dislocation, it is clear that sacral fracture is a result of continuatton of the force causing the pelvic fracture-dislocation. It has been shown thaf the incidences of severe shock, viserel injury, fracture and dirlocaion of extremity were much more common in patients with sacral fracture than those without. 18 cases, 78.2%, of the patients with sacral fracture in this series, had lumbosacral nerve injury, while none of the other 24 patients without sacral fracture experienced nerve injury. Thus sacral fracture is the main cause of damaging the nerve. Severe as it be, sacral fracture and nerve injory need not specific management. For treatment, general condition of the patient is still of utmost importance and the pelvic fracture-dislocation ought to be traeted as a whole.

Blood acetylcholine content and cholinesterase activity were estimated in 49 patients with chronic gastritis and 20 patients with peptic ulcer. The changes observed in chronic gastritis were very similar to those in peptic ulcer, i. e. the increase in blood level of a cetylcholine accompanied the decrease in blood cholinesterase activity. Since the cholinergic nerve impulses stimulate both parietal cells and antral G-cells to secrete gastic acid, so vagotonia plays an important role in the pathogenes is of duodenal ulcer. whether the cholinergic mechanism does exist in the pathogenesis of chronic gastritis is not certain, Furher investigation is needed.
