Abstract: Objective This was a prospective observational study on effects of valsartan and irbesartan in patients with diabetic nephropathy on trace urinary albumin and blood pressure. Methods A prospective observational study was conducted on 106 cases of type 2 diabetic patients with nephropathy. The patients were randomly divided into two groups (A and B), patients in group A (n = 51) were treated with valsartan 80 mg/d, those in group B (n = 55) were treated with irbesartan 150 mg/d, for 12 weeks as a course, for each course of treatment, microalbuminuria, and blood pressure were measured for a total of three courses. Results (1) Valsartan and irbesartan groups' trace urinary albumin during three courses of treatment difference had statistically significant difference (Z=-6.490 P <0.001). (2) The blood pressure of the two groups during the three courses of treatment was significantly different (P <0.05); in each course of treatment the systolic blood pressure was significantly different (P<0.05).Conclusion Both drugs could reduce microalbuminuria and had antihypertensive effect in patients with diabetic nephropathy, while irbesartan was more effective in lowering blood pressure as compared with valsartan.
