Abstract: The compound action potential produced by stimulation of the superficial peroneal nerve were extracellulary recorded from the scintic nerve of rats and their parameters were mea- sured and analysed in the present study.Waves Aα,Aβ,Aγ,Aδ and C were shown in succes- sion upon electrical stimulation.Wave A appeared most distinctly and wave C was smallest in size, showing diphasic in shape. The threshold, optimal strength, amplitude and conduction velocity of wave A were significantly different than the corresponding parameters in wave C.Utmost difference was also shown between subcomponents of wave A.The amplitude of action potential was found to be proportional to the potential's conduction velocity and the threshold and optimal strength of stimuli.Negatively going exponantial correlation was seen between the threshold as well as optimal intensity and the conduction velocity or amplitude. These results indicate that the conduction velocity of various components of compound action potentials is the fundamental basis in describing and identifying different kinds of nerve fibers and that parameters of amplitude, threshold and optimal strength also play their role in explanation and practical application of fiber classification.
Key words: compound action potential, threshold, optimal intensity, amplitude, conduction velocity
