Abstract: The objective was to study the effects of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF)and neurotrophin-3(NT-3)on the growth and development of cultured spinal cord neurons of fetal rats. The survival and growth condition of cultured spinal cord neurons were observed under phase-contract microscope. The cell numbers were counted. The body diameter and process were measured. All data obtained were expressed by x±s and analyzed by variance analysis and SNK test. Both BDNF and NT-3 can increase survival rate of neurons in vitro. Effect of BDNF is more significant than NT-3. BDNF can enhance the development of cell bodies and NT-3 can promote the outgrowth of processes. BDNF and NT-3 have specific effects on growth and development of cultured spinal cord neurons.
