The 5-HT immunoreactive fibers(5-HT-IR fibers)in pleural sensory cluster of aplysia were examined at the light microscopic level using ABC immunohistochemical method. Both the cell bodies and the proximal axon segments of pleural sensory neurons were surrounded by 5-HT-IR fibers with numerous 5-HT-IR varicosities. To analyze the size distribution of the 5-HT-IR varieosities quantitatively,4 microscopic fields of approximately 32000μm were drawn with a camera lueida. The size of individural 5-HT-IR varicosities was then estimated from the camera lucida drawings by measuring their diameters along the short axis. The average short axis diameter of the varicosities was 1.1±0.6 μm(mean±

;
n
=574),ranging from 0.2~3.8 μm.The shape of the size distribution of the 5-HT-IR varicosities was skewed towards the smaller diameter.Based on the size distribution of the varicosities along a strand of fibers,at least four different types of 5-HT-IR fibers were ob- served. Some fibers sent out branches, which usually emerged from a varicosity.Abranched varicosity might generate 2~4 daugher branches with sub-varicosity.Aaverage short axis diameter of branched varieosities was 1.7±0.5 μm(
n
=35),ranging from 1.0 μm to 2.4 μm.Some small varicosities seemed to contact with the somata surface of pleural sensory neurons. But this level of resolution was not sufficient to determine if these immunoreactive varicosities actually contact with pleural sensory neurons in synaptic. The cell body of the sensory neuron was covered by a thin sheath of glial cells that might hinder access of the transmitter secreted from the 5-HT-IR varicosities.

The morphological properties of serotoninergic immunoreactive fibers and their spatial relationships to pleural sensory neurons of Aplysia were studied with an immunocytochemical ABC method under light and transmission electron microscopy. The data show that 5-HT-IR varicosities make apparent synaptic contacts with pleural sensory neurons of aplysia. In light microscopy,it was observed numerous 5-HT-IR fibers containing varicosities around the somata and the initial axon segment of pleural sensory neurons.Labeled varicosities(
n
=574)might be classfied into three groups based on their size:i.e.small(0.2~1.2μm, 79%),medium(1.4~2.4μm,18%),and large(>2.6μm,3%)groups.In electron microscopy,it was observed axosomatic, axoaxonic, axoglial synaptic contacts in the pleural sensory clusters. Two types of synaptic contacts, flat and invaginated, were found. After measuring the shortest diameter of the varicosity(0.1~1.0μm,
n
=42),it appeared that only the small varicosities formed synaptic contacts. These results suggest that under appropriated physiological conditions, serotonin might be released from varicosities directly onto perikayra of pleural sensory neurons eliciting the cellular changes correlated with sensitization. Two types of synaptic contacts, flat and invaginatcd, could represent two different functional states, the invaginated type more effective than the other. Thus, pleural sensory neurons con- tributing to sensitization of tail withdrawal reflex in aplysia could be activated by serotonin- ergic neurons.

Measurements of the intracellular sodium activity(a
Na
i
,as a indicator of sodium-pump activity)and the paracellular potassium activity(a
K

)were performed in sheep cardiac Purkinje fibres at rest and during stimulation using ion-selective microelectrodes.During a period of stimulation, paracellular potassium first increased and then declined below control values as long as pump activity was enhanced. The time course of the maximal diastolic potential was similar to pump activity, whereas that of the action potential duration deviated markedly. Further experiments on the effect of pump activation following challenges to zero potassium solution revealed that the rate dependence of the action potential duration was more sensitive to extracellular calcium than it was to the pump activity.Quantitative analysis of the data showed that in the physiological range of heart rate(60~150/min),the contribution of the electrogenic pump current to total repolarizing currents is between 12% and 25%.

Aspinal cord over-hemisection model was reproduced using a sterotaxic and electro-magnet-controlled pincher for spinal injury. The locomotion of paralyzed hindlimb was observed in this model and its possible mechanisms were analysed. Our results showed that the ipsliateral hindilmb paralyzed transiently and gradually restituted its coordinative locomotion and weight-bearing about one week after spinal cord injury. When the spinal cord was sec- tioned longitudinally along its central line from L

,the locomotion in contralateral hindlimb remained. When second over-hemisection was made contralaterally to the first one, both the hindlimb's locomotion disappeared. The results indicate that there are segmental interconnections between left and right central pattern generator(CPG)or spinal locomotion generator(SLG),which may related closely to spinal reflex center.Under the condition of completely losing descending control in one side,CPGs of SLGs in this side can still be activated and basically play their role in controlling the ipsilateral hindlimb's locomotion, possibly by the involvement of descending innervation and/or CPGor SLGat segmental level from the contralateral side.

There were more kinds of cells in the early human pregnancy decidual tissue. It may be difficult to distingush these cells into classes with HE stain. Two kinds of cells, big and small, were identified.Big cells contained rich glycogen and lipid, while small cells did not contain them. With immunohistochemical stain,We have found a lot of macrophages and HLA-DR positive cells. However,Tlymphocytes were scarce. This study supported the view that small cells were suppressor cells. They suppressed the proliferation and immunocom-peteace of Tlymphocytes.Because of the suppression of Tlymphocytes, blastocytes could be immplanted and embryos could not be rejected from maternal decidua.

The Corti's organs of the guinea pigs were examined by scanning electron microscope either immediately or 1,3,7,15,or 30 days after the exposure to continuous white noise at different intensities of 125 dB SPL and 132 dB SPL for 1 hour.Swelling, fusion, collapse and even loss of OHC stereocilia were mainly observed in the third and forth turns of cochlea. There was a lesion length of 10mm of corti's organ in guinea pigs immediately after the exposure to white noise at 132 dB SPL,and 7 mm at 125 dB SPL.70% of OHC was damaged in the lesion length of 10 mm of Corti's Organ in guinea pigs immediately after the exposure to white noise at 132 dB SPL,and 50% of OHC in the lesion length of 7 mm at 125dB SPL.The lesion length of Corti's organ and the amount of OHC were increased with the intensity of white noise, and decreased with the survival intervals after the exposure. The slight damage to OHC stereocilia, such as swelling and fusion, could be recoverable subsequent to the exposure to white noise, but the moderate and severe damage, such as collapse and loss of stereocilia were unrecoverable. It seemed that the early stage(less than 15 days after the exposure to white noise at 132 dB SPL,and 7 days at 125 dB SPL)was essential for the affected OHCto recover from the damage. The relationship of the features of damage to hair cells with white noise was discussed.

Twenty-three cases of acinic cell adenocarcinoma(ACC)of salivary gland were studied with histochemistry and immunohisto chemistry staining compared with H-E-stained slides. It was shown that though the PASstain played an important role in diagnosis of ACC,this histochemical method has its limit. Because there were different reactions of PASin different types of ACC.However, another histochemical methods can be used easily for the differentia ldiagnosis of the ACC with the clear cells or the ACC with oxyphilic granules. Immunohistochemical staining for Keratin,S-100 protein and Carcinoembryonic antigen is of key importance in the differential diagnosis of ACC with low differentiation. The histogenesis of ACC is also discussed.
