Abstract: Using a rat model of reversible regional cerebral ischemia, the effects of electro-acupuncture were examined at the point of “huantiao” before reperfusion. The left middle cerebral artery(MCA)occlusion was achieved with a nylon filament placed into the vessel. The results showed that animals in the acupuncture treatment group had a significantly regaining of movement ability than that in the ischemia reperfusion group. The mean levels of malondialdehyde(MDA)concentration and superoxide dismutase(SOD)activity of the ischemic hemisphere in the acupuncture treatment group returned to the level of sham control group. The cortical somatosensory evoked potentials(SEP)measured ipsilaterally on the cortex of ischemic hemisphere showed that with electro acupuncture, both P1 latency and P1-N1 amplitude improved significantly. The results suggested that electro-acupuncturing at the point of “huantiao” has beneficial effects on focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats.
