Abstract: 12 wistar rats were studied under electron microscope. Changes in the convoluted tubules and basal laminae of kidney were caused by large doses of calcitriol. Prominent changes electron-dense granules (calcium phosphate) and swollen mitochondria were seen. The deposit of calcium phosphate is an early phenomenon of the injury of mitochondria which is followed by swollen of mitochondria. Lamellar deposits of electron-dense fine granules along basal laminae of the tubules of kidney were slso seen. No prominent differences were seen between suckling rata and older rats in relation to the intensity of the pathologic changes and the duration of calcitriol administration.

Key words: vitamin D3, convoluted tubules of kidney, mitochondria, calcium phosphate granules
