Ornithine decarboxylase(ODC), the rate limiting enzyme of polyamine metabolism,is felt to be important in the generation of ischemic brain edema and infarction. We measured Evens blue staining, regional blood flow(rCBF) and specific gravity of brain tissue following focal ischemia in cat middle cerebral artery occlusion model.Pretretment with ODC inhibitor α-difluoromethylornithine(DFMO) decresed Evens blue staining from 29.6% to 17.2% (P<0.01) and also reduced specific gravity from 1.028 to 1.016 (P<0.01).The rCBF increased by a maximum of 394% as compared with control group. These data suggest that polyamine production and ODC activity play a significant role in the development of ischemic edenia.

Study on mutagenic effects of artificially fermented Cordyceps sinensis(AFCS) was carried out by three mutagenicity tests, namely, bone marrow cell micronucleus assay, spermatocyte aberration analysis in mice and Ames test. There were no significant difference betweenthe frequencies of micronuclei in three dosed groups and that in controls.Similarly, spermatocyte aberration analysis also showed negative result. In Ames test, the sample did not show any direct or indirect-acting mutagenicity to the test strains. The results demonstrate that AFCS does not have mutagenic effects on both somatic and reproductive cells of mice, and also,on salmonella strains.

Two ovaries of the female mouse aged 30 postnatal days were autotransplanted subcutaneously in order to study the growth and secretion of the transplanted ovaries. The ovarian graft was surrounded by a thick layer of connective tissue.Follicle necrosis began on day 2.Blood cells infiltrated into the necrotic area.Four days after transplantation ,there were some primodial follicles and preantral follicles in the outer cortex of the ovary. On day 7,a few antral follicles, graffian follicles and interstitial-land-like tissue could be detected. On day 14 to 21, there were luteinic tissue in the graft.Necrosis disappeared.28 to 72 days after grafting, a lot of follicles in different stages of development, corpora luteas and interstitial glands could be found. The estrus cycle emerged 7.9±1.7 days after transplantation. This study indicates that bilaterally autotransplanted ovaries can grow and secrete sex hormones which maintain the estrus cycle.

The total cell proteins obtained from the trophozoites of four Giardia lamblia isolates, of which three were isolated from China (C1, C2, and C3 ), and one from America(CDC), were studied by using an isoelectric focusing technique. It was shown that each of the three domestic isolates produced identical banding patterns,of which bands rang from pl 3.6 to 8.3.The banding pattern of the Anierican isolate was different from those of the Chinese isolates, which produced two adclitional new bands. The two distuict bands located at pI 7.1 and 7.8 respectively. The present study shows that geographical separation may be one of the reasons which causes difference between Giardia isolates from different geographical regions.

Forty-seven tissue samples which were difficult to diagnose by light microscopy(LM) were examined by electron microscopy(EM) from 1984 to 1990 in the PLA's General Hospital, aiming at comparing the diagnostic results of CM and EM.The differential diagnosis of non-differentiated small cell tumors was very hard in route pathological-examination, but they all had the charateristics of their own, being helpful for differential diagnosis. However, there was no any detail report for the differential diagnosis of lymphomas by EMin China. We analyzed the results of lymphomas.Of the 47 cases of lymphomas examined by EM,there were 32 cases of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, 2 cases of histiocytic hyperplasia and lymphocytic leukemia each, and 1 case of malignant histiocytic hyperplasia, lymphomatous granuloma and histocytic reactive hyperplasia of bone marrow each. These results show that EM is helpful for the differential diagnosis of small cell tumors.

In this study, immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) gene rearrangement in peripheral blood or bone marrow smear of multiple myeloma (MM) patients by PCR techniques was analyzed.Out of 21 patients, 17 were found to be positive and 4 negative, two of which were light chain type. This positive rate of peripheral blood IgH gene rearrangement was the same as that of bone marrow. These results suggest that the detection of IgH gene rearrangement is one of the most sensitive method for the diagnosis of MM,which can counteract the weaknesses of morphology and serology.

To investigate the influences of preload, afterload and contractility of myocardium on left ventricular diastolic function,134 patients suffering from different kinds of diseases were examined by echocardiography. The patients were divided into five subgroups according to diameter of left atrium, end diastolic volume of left ventricle, mean arterial blood pressure, mean velocity of circumferential fiber shortening and ejection fraction of left ventricle. It was found that:①Variation of preload influenced chiefly early diastolic filling parameters, peak flow velocity of early diastole(EPFV)and time-velocity integral of early diastole (ETVI) which increased with increasing preload.②Variation of afterload influenced not only early, but also late diastolic filling parameters.ETVI increased, peak flow velocity of atrial contraction(APFV) and time-velocity integral of atrial contraction(ATVI) decreased, and the ratio between APFV and EPFV and between ATVI and total time-velocity integral (TTVI) re-duced with decreasing afterload.③Decreased contractility of myocardium as manifested by a reduction of EPFV and ETVI,and a significant componsatory increase in APFV,ATVI and the ratio between APFV and EPFV and between ATVI and TTVI in order to maintain the cardiac output.

This article deals with the links between three gastrointestino-hormones and irritable ulcer in“cold-ties”induced ulcer model. Our experiment indicated that: ①The serum gastrin levels of the stress group were significantly higher than that of the control. This might be due o the excitement of vagus nerve under stress.② The serum levels of somatostatin in stress group were lower than that of the control ,this indicated that the inhibihition of somatostatin in gastro-secretin was reduced which in turn caused hyperhydrochloria.③The serumglucagon correlated positively with serum gastrin level and negatively with blood sugar. These peptides might function as gastrointestinal hormones and neurotransmitters in the CNSand peripheral nervous system.

33 cases of chronic hepatitis B (32 cases for control) were treated by cinobufacini. The same management was used for both control and treating groups ,except an additional treatment by injecting 4 mL of cinobufacini per day intramuscularly, for the treating group. There were 45 days in one course of treatment.Afrer one course, the negative conversion rates of HBeAg and HBV-DNA in the treating group were 44.84% and 34.61% respectively, while in the control group they were only 7.14% and 0 respectively. This observation suggests that short-term effect of cinobufacini is rather satisfactory for treating the chronic hepatitis B.
