Spatial localization of EPSP evoked by stimulation of the alfactory nerve on the soma,lateral and ventral dendrites of the crucian carp Mauthner cell was explored by means of multiple intracellular recording technique. The maximum amplitude of the first component of the olfactory EPSP was recorded at the regions near the soma. It declined progressively along the lateral and ventral dendrites. The second component presented the largest amplitude at the most distal segment of the ventral dendrite and became smaller and smaller while the recording electrode was moved gradually towards the soma and the lateral dendrite. It is suggested that the olfactory inputs concentrate and impinge on the sites near the soma and on the most distal ventral dendrite at least more than 600μm from the soma respectively.

Nineteen Chinese skulls with 38 temporal bones and 6 seperate temporal bones were observed and measured,the data of which provided the relationship among the structures of inner ear and mastoid for decompression of endolymphatic sac and neurotomy of infralabyrinthine vestibular nerve in clinical practice. It also suggested that attention should be paid to the variation of sigmoid sinus and jugular fossa during operation.

Two methods for preparing rabbit type antibody against the New Castle Virus were reported,one being with Freund's complete adjuvant(FCA),the other without FCA.The result showed that the titer of hemagglutination inhibition antibody of the former was 1/640 while the latter was 1/2560. In conclusion,the method without FCAwas firstly selected for making rabbit type antibody against the New Castle Virus.

After autotransplantation of both ovaries in mouse histochemical study was carried out to determine the growth and function of the ovaries. 2 to 4 d after transplantation,there was follicular necrosis in the ovary. Preantral follicles existed at the outer cortex. Histochemical staining showed almost negative. 7 to 14 d after transplantation,antral follicles could be seen in the graft.Histochemical staining showed positive. The estrus cycle occured. 14 to 72 d after transplantation,a lot of follicles in different stages of development,corpora lutea and interstitial glands could be found. Enzymes distributed extensively,and became strongly positive. This study indicates that bilaterally autotransplanted ovary can grow and secrete hormones.

A prospective cohort study of the high-risk population among miners and smelters in Yunnan Tin Corporation was done from 1992 to the end of 1994. The results showed that the risk of lung cancer increased with accumulated radon decay products(WLM) exposure years of radon first radon progeny age attained. The study supported that radon progeny is a lung carcinogen among miners in YTC. There is no interactions between radon progeny and smoking chronic bronchitis dust exposure arsenic exposure in the analyses. The patterns of interaction should be evaluated in future.

Immunohistochemical study of PCNA in 53 cases of astrocytomas was reported. According to the criterion of Daumas-Duport's histological grading,the above mentioned astrocytomas included 14 cases of grade Ⅱ,14 cases of grade Ⅲ and 25 cases of grade Ⅳ. The mean values of immunohistochemical labeling indices (LI) of PCNA are 2.99%,9.73%and 38.06% respectively. The result showed that there existed a positive relation between the histological grading of astrocytomas and the immunohistochemical LIof PCNA,and LIof PCNAin the proliferating areas of small cell type were higher than that of proliferating areas of multiform cell type. PCNA can reflect the proliferating ratio of tumors. We can apply this work for judging the malignancy of astrocytomas and providing a valuable index for clinical prognosis of patients.

The distribution and number of dendritic cells in 60 cases of breast and tissue around the tumor were investigated. The result showed that S-100 protein positive dendritic cells distributed sparsely in malignant cells and formed a cluster among lymph cells and plasma cells.Such dendritic cell was related to histologic classification of breast carcinoma,metastases in lymph node and the intensity of lymphocyte and plasma cell infiltration around the carcinoma. This finding indicated that host antitumor immunoreaction that related to dendritic cells was different according to the phases of breast carcinoma.

To observe myocardial viability in infarcted area in patients with older myocardial infarction,we perfomed pilot study to identify the severely ischemic myocardium using the infusion of a thallium glucose insulin potassium solution.Results were compared with those obtained in rest images. In 336 segments of 28 patients ²⁰¹Tl rest images,45 out of 119 infarction segments,revealed ²⁰¹Tl activity after GIK infusion 37.8%。 In 180 segments of 15 patients with PTCA or CABG,28 out of the 76 infarction segments revealed ²⁰¹Tl activity after GIKinfusion 36.8%。42% segments with rest images were detected after operation.These results confirm that continuous infusion of ²⁰¹Tl with a low dose of insulin in a glucose and potassium chloride solution is safe and may enhance cellular uptake of the radiotracer in severely ischemic regions especially in older myocardial infarction.This study suggests that within the old infarcted area,there still exists viable myocardium.

Echocardiography was used in investigation of cardiac structure and left ventricular systolic function in 374 patients with essential hypertension (EH) and 88 age matched healthy subjects. It was found that diameters of aortic root (AOD),left atrial (LAD) and left ventricular mass (LVM) were significantly increased (P <0.05 and <0.01) in patients with EHthan in healthy subjects. Stroke volume (SV) and cardiac output (CO) increased,but left ventricular fractional shortening (FS) decreased in patients with EH(Ⅲ degrees) (P <0.05),there were no changes in patients with EH(Ⅰand Ⅱ degrees). It was suggested that left ventricular systolic function decreased with developing situation in patients with EH.

74 subjects,aged 14～76 years,with heart rate range 55～104 bpm with no evidence of cardiovascular disease were included in this study. To determine the normal range of pulsed Doppler measurements of left ventricular filling multiple regression was used to analyse the effects of age and heart rate on the measurements. The regression equation was used to calculate the predicted normal values adjusted by age and heart rate within 95% confidence interval (95% CI) and the age,heart rate predicted value table was made. The peak atrial filling velocity (A) and peak early filling velocity/peak atrial filling velocity (E/A) were significantly correlated with heart rate and age (R=0.66, 0.65P <0.001) .With every 10 years increase in age,an increase in 5.9 (95% CI 5.0～6.8)cm/s,E/Adecrease in 0.21 (0.18～0.24) and with every 5 beats increase in heart rate an increase in 2.33 ( 1.80～2.85 )cm/s and E/Adecrease in 0.06 ( 0.03～0.09 ) were found. With predicted values,changes of diastolic function could be assessed.

The healthy status of 623 elderly subjects aged 60 years and above was examined including height,weight,blood pressure,fasting blood sugar(BS),total cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),electrocardiogram and echocardiogram. The subjects were divided into four subgroups according to their body mass index(BMI): thin (BMIP all<0.05). There were positive correlations among TC,TGand weight,BMI,systolic blood pressure and BS(P <0.05 and 0.001 respectively); negative correlation between TCand diastolic blood pressure(P <0.01). Stepwise multivariate regression analysis disclosed that TC,TG,BSand DBPall alone and jointly positively correlated with BMIexcept SBP. It was suggested that obesity is one of the important risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

To investigate the effects of thrombolysis on endothelin release in acute pulmonary embolism and related histopathologic changes in pulmonary arteriols,a canine model of acute pulmonary embolism was designed by injecting autologous blood clot. Fourteen model dogs were randomized to either urokinase treated(UK) or control (CTL) group. Haemodynamic monitoring was performed by introducing catheters through right femoral artery and vein. Arterial endothelin was determined before embolization,before UKinfusion,1.5 and 3.0 h after UKadministration(corresponding time point in CTL ). At the end,the dogs were sacrificed and lung removed for histopathologic and transmission electron microscopic investigations. Plasma endothelin of UKtreated dogs increased progressively with the decrease of pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance[from baseline (51.63±10.09) pg/Lto (99.25±12.90) pg/L 3.0 h after UKinitiation,P <0.05 and P <0.01 within and between groups respectively]. There were no significant changes in pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance and plasma endothelin remained unchanged in CTLdogs with time. Histopathologic analysis showed notable patchy hemorrhages with thickened alveolar walls in CTLdogs.In marked contrast with UKdogs with relative normal pulmonary structures,vasoconstrictive sign with degenevated mitochondria in it was demonstrated in the endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells in this group. In conclusion,thrombolytic therapy in acute pulmonary embolism can not only revert the haemodynamic changes,but also relieve the lung tissue and pulmonary arterial injuries; the elevation of arterial plasma endothelin levels in UKdogs may not be the result of pulmonary lesions,but rather an index of pulmonary reperfusion.

The author together with coworkers from Beijing,Shanghai Ha'erbin,Shenyang and Wuhan,performed a contrast study among EEG,BEAM,TCDand CTin 296 cases of hypertension at different stages and found that hypertension not only resulted in vascular disorder of the heart and brain,but also gave rise to changes in the brain funtion and blood flow dynamics at the early stage of the onset. The changes could be revealed by EEG,BEAMand TCD,instead of CT.The author discovered that there were great differences in different stages of hypertension during the functional check,which had a parallel relationship with the patient's status of progress. Among these functional examinations,TCDshowed the highest sensitivity for reflecting the change in hypertension and followed by BEAMand EEGin a descending order. These indexes are of great value for the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension,as well as prediction of the blood vessel trouble.

For investigating the relationship between essential hypertension and atherosclerosis,metabolism of lipids and marker of thrombin activation in 25 patients with essential hypertension and 20 normal subjects were observed. It was found that apoAand PGAwere significant lower and PAIwere significant higher in hypertension group than in control group (P <0.001 and 0.01),there was positive correlation between systolic hypertension and oxLDL (P <0.01). It is suggested that essential hypertension is one of the important dangerous factors in inducing atherosclerosis.

In order to investigate the mechanism how Yichuanping (a Chinese herb agent) treat asthma and allergy,the expression of IL-4 and IL-5 in the lung tissue of allergic mouse were observed . The result showed that the expression of IL-4 mRNA⁺ cell and IL-5 mRNA⁺ cells was lower in Yichnanping group (29.2±7.1,39.1±10.5) than in OVAgroup (46.4±8.9,64.8±13.7). The result indicated that Yichuanping can suppress the expression of IL-4 mRNA⁺ and IL-5 mRNA⁺ cells in the lung tissue of allergic mouse,suggesting it may be beneficial for treating asthma.

Long Term Following up of 94 Cases Deep Located Intracranial Lesions after High Dose Stereotactic Fractionated Radiotherapy by X-knife

94 cases with deep located intracranial lesions were treated with high dose stereotactic fractionated rediotherapy by X-knife. Following up was 4～38 months,mean 24.1 months. Therapeatic evaluation was excellent with the autocontrol of pre post irradation. The shrink ratio of the lesions was 50.55%,the coutrol ratio 38.46%,and the clinical sign improvement ratio 89.01%. The complications,such as nausea,vomiting,lethargy paralysis of cranial nerve,tinnitus and mental symptom were found in 13% cases. This is a first report either in our nation or even in the world on such long term following up study of such a big group patients with deep located intracranial lesions after high dose fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy by X-knife and the author tried to analysed the causes and proventions of the complications.
